“Each year, ARM seeks to give back to the community we are a part of,” said Andrea Ashman. “We’ve collected socks, toiletries, and toys donating them to organizations like Volunteers of the Chesapeake and So Others Might Eat. We’ve focused on children before; however, we have never served very young children, the tiny tots.”
President James Winegardner says, “Our staff are faithful Seventh-day Adventist Church members. They take part in many ways in many ministries. We are delighted that they are supporting this community service project as a staff group.”
“When I see so much need in our community, I feel the desire to do something to help and ease the needs of the people,” said Ana Barrientos, a longtime ARM employee. “It gives peace and joy to help and a feeling of serving as Jesus did: "He did not come to be served, but to serve. (Mathew 20:28).” Employee Frank Nevers adds, “It wasn’t too long ago that I was purchasing diapers for my family, and I am happy I can help another family with something this essential… [this shows] the spirit of the Lord working.”
Adventist Community Services Center of Greater Washington was established in 1983 and serves over 6000 disadvantaged families every year. This mission of ACSGW is to “help the disadvantaged and disenfranchised in our community by empowering individuals through compassionate emergency care, life education, and community development to attain self-sufficiency and independence.”
