Risk Control Consultant Gideon Dayak is scouring the places no one thinks to look. As a member of ARM’s Risk Management Education Department, Dayak locates safety hazards and shares recommendations on how to fix them before an accident occurs.“We look for areas that could become hazards in places where we go and places where we work. These locations include churches, schools, youth camps, and hospitals,” Dayak said. “We identify hazards and suggest corrective procedures so to avoid future accidents.”
While you are eating, sleeping and getting ready for the 60th General Conference Session in San Antonio, Texas this July, ARM Risk Management Agents are getting GC Session ready for you. Here are four things our team suggests GC Session attendees should come prepared for.
1. Lots of Walking
The 2015 GC Session will be housed in two locations–the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and the Alamodome. A covered walkway will provide safe passage from the convention center to the dome without pedestrians having to cross busy streets or highways. According to Google maps, these locations are a little less than a mile apart on foot. However, getting from your hotel to either location may be quite a trek.“You must wear comfortable footwear because there will be limited public transportation between hotels,” Dayak said.
2. Lots of Sun
According to Accuweather.com, the projected temperature highs for San Antonio this July are more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit/32 degrees+ Celsius. Prepare for harsh sun exposure and high humidity, especially if used to cooler temperatures. Bring your preferred brand of sunscreen with an SPF factor suited to your needs.“Be sure you have a covering on your head—an umbrella or a hat,” Dayak said.
Staying hydrated is another important part of daily planning. Make sure you carry water bottles and keep yourself hydrated.
3. Lots of Fountains
Another potential hazard surrounding the GC Session venue are the many water areas in Hemisfair Park, located outside the convention center. There are numerous water areas, man-made waterfalls, and the edge of the river walk is open in areas. The city of San Antonio has posted no swimming or wading in these water areas.Be careful when walking to avoid areas that may be slippery when wet. Parents should be extra alert to prevent their children from interacting with or falling into any water areas
4. Lots of Trolleys and Buses
VIA Metropolitan Transit is the downtown public transportation service in San Antonio. This system includes a free trolley service known as the “E.” It has routes from the convention center through the hotel and restaurant district of downtown.“When using public transportation watch your surroundings and make sure people aren’t following you,” Dayak said. “Make sure you walk in daylight or lighted areas only. Be careful when you pull out your wallet.”
It is also a best safety practice to remove your name badge when you leave the convention center or Alamodome. Lanyards and name tags mark you as an easy target to criminals who may wish to cause harm.
Knowing what to prepare for and being aware of your surroundings can help you keep yourself and your loved ones from harm. Find more information and download the GC Session app at http://2015.gcsession.org.
