Before Hurricane Matthew Comes Your Way
Before Hurricane Matthew reaches you, make sure you’re familiar with storm vocabulary so that you can prepare accordingly. Use ARM’s Emergency Storm Preparation Brochure to know when you need to evacuate and make sure your emergency kit has everything you’ll need to weather the storm.Severe weather and storms usually come with powerful winds and flying debris. Average wind speeds during hurricanes can range anywhere between 75-157 miles per hour or higher. Protect your facilities from wind damage and flying debris by reinforcing your windows, doors and roofing.
Review ARM’s Water Damage Loss Prevention tips to minimize water damage to your facilities and equipment.
If necessary, cancel or reschedule any events your ministry has planned during the time Hurricane Matthew is predicted to enter your area. Unsure if a cancellation is necessary? Evaluate the following:
- Local officials declare a state of emergency or evacuation
- No running water, heat, or electricity
- An extended power outage
- Roads are unsafe or impassable
Evaluation and Cleanup After Hurricane Matthew

If your facilities have experienced any damages or losses, contact the ARM claims team as soon as you are able. Send a follow up email to the claims department detailing the damage, what happened and include photos of the damage. ARM will assign an adjuster to assist you. Flooding and Water Damage
If you’re experiencing flooding and water damage, make sure you know how to handle each of these situations. Learn how to protect your property before and after a flood with ARM’s How to Be Flood Ready infographic. After the flood: Allow for floodwaters to recede before entering rooms or buildings. Check for moisture on walls, floors, carpets and furniture. Immediately remove as much moisture as possible to prevent mold and mildew. These irritants may cause asthma flare-ups and other health problems. Wash your hands often and wear gloves and boots during cleanup to prevent illness. Take photos of any water in the building and save damaged personal property. If your camera has the capability to date/time stamp, use it for claims review. Treat every electrical item with great care, as the circuits may be wet or damp. Move around slowly. If water is still standing, watch for floating objects or electrical equipment that could cause injury. Carry a flashlight as you inspect for damage. Avoid using the toilets and water faucets until you have checked for sewage and water line damage.
